All the political parties in Northamptonshire agree that more cycling should be encouraged for the sake of health, the environment and less traffic. That is the good news from a special CTC pre-election survey. Five out of five parties surveyed, including the countys three largest, also made sensible proposals about how to support cycling.
The survey, carried out in April 2005, asked parties whether they would explicitly fund cycling, and how they would make it easier to cycle in town, improve consultation, and increase cyclists safety.
The Conservatives made a commitment to spending money on cycling and giving it high priority in the Local Transport plan. Labour promised to implement the existing cycling strategy to create better cycling routes and safer roads. The Liberal Democrats strongly supported on-road cycling with steps to make it safer and better consultation with highway designers. We also received positive replies from the Greens and the UK Independence Party (UKIP).
